Best monday.com Apps for Complex Task Hierarchies (2026 Roundup)
We reviewed five marketplace apps that claim to solve monday.com's hierarchy problem. Here's what each one actually does — and which is worth your money.
Why You Might Need a Hierarchy App
monday.com added multi-level subitems in late 2024, but the structural limitations remain: sub-items don't appear in Workload or My Work, dashboard widgets don't aggregate across levels, and there's no tree view for navigating deep projects. If your work requires more than two or three meaningful levels of nesting, native monday.com isn't enough.
The monday.com marketplace has dozens of apps targeting this gap. We tested the most prominent ones and compared them on hierarchy depth, usability, reporting, and value for money.
The Apps We Reviewed
1. Unlimited Subitems
14-day trialUnlimited Subitems extends monday.com's native subitem model to allow deeper nesting — beyond the 4-level cap. It's positioned squarely at the "I need more levels" use case, with keywords like "child subitems," "parent-child," and "tree."
Strengths
- — Removes the level cap
- — Familiar monday.com UX
- — Good for teams already using subitems
Weaknesses
- — Still doesn't fix Workload visibility
- — No tree view
- — Reporting gaps persist
Best for: Teams that just need more nesting levels and can live with the other limitations.
2. BigPicture PPM
14-day trialBigPicture is a full-featured programme and portfolio management app for monday.com. It adds Gantt charts, resource management, risk tracking, and — critically — a proper WBS view. It's the enterprise-tier solution in this space.
Strengths
- — Full WBS and Gantt support
- — Portfolio-level reporting
- — Enterprise-grade feature set
Weaknesses
- — Complex setup and learning curve
- — Expensive for smaller teams
- — Overkill for task-level hierarchy
Best for: Large organisations managing programmes of projects who need full PPM tooling.
3. Infinite Subitems
14-day trialSimilar territory to Unlimited Subitems — this app focuses on removing the depth limit and making it easier to organise and reuse nested task structures. It emphasises workflow organisation and reusability of sub-item templates.
Strengths
- — Sub-item templates and reuse
- — Good for repetitive project structures
- — Clean interface
Weaknesses
- — Same Workload/My Work blind spots
- — Limited reporting improvements
- — Overlaps with Unlimited Subitems
Best for: Teams running repeatable project types who want templated sub-item structures.
4. Bird's Eye View
14-day trialBird's Eye View takes a different angle — instead of deepening the subitem model, it visualises item relationships across boards as a mind map or tree. It's designed for cross-board dependency tracing and portfolio visibility rather than task-level nesting.
Strengths
- — Cross-board tree visualisation
- — Great for dependency mapping
- — Useful for programme overview
Weaknesses
- — Read-only view, not a working hierarchy
- — Doesn't help with task assignment
- — Not suited to daily task management
Best for: Programme managers who need a visual map of cross-board relationships and dependencies.
5. TaskTree
Our pickTaskTree was built specifically for hierarchical task management inside monday.com — not as a bolted-on extension of subitems, and not as an enterprise PPM suite. The focus is on making deep task trees workable for everyday project management: navigable hierarchy, proper assignment visibility, and rollup progress.
Strengths
- — Purpose-built for task hierarchy
- — Navigable tree view
- — Assignment visibility at all levels
- — Fast to set up, low learning curve
Weaknesses
- — Not a full PPM tool (intentionally)
- — No Gantt or resource planning
Best for: Teams that need real task hierarchy inside monday.com without the complexity of enterprise PPM.
